Great Bend High School played host to a six-team invitational at home on Saturday, encountering struggles and injury in the singles division.
Smaller-school Ellinwood took home the first place, followed by Dodge City.
The Lady Panthers secured fifth place in the team standings, with their No. 2 doubles team, composed of Brianna Schartz and Jami McVay, posting a GBHS day-best 4-1 record to finish in second place in their respective division.
“Our No. 2 doubles team had another good showing and have improved their record to 9-3 on the year,” Great Bend head coach Shannon Schartz said. “Sophia played hard all day for us at No. 2 singles.”
Shannon Schartz was alluding to Sophia McVay, who was 1-4 and placed fifth in her division.
Great Bend’s singles players indeeed had a rough day, topped off by No. 1 player Brooke Tiemeyer injury-defaulting her final two matches in finishing 0-5 on the day.
“Brooke rolled her ankle in her fourth match and was unable to continue playing,” Great Bend head coach Shannon Schartz said. “Our No. 1 players are struggling because it is a difficult transition from playing junior varsity last year to playing the No. 1 spots on varsity this year.
“They will continue to improve.”
In No. 1 doubles, Abby Hammeke and Randi McAfee posted a 2-3 mark to take home fourth place.
