GARDEN CITY — Great Bend High School senior Chon Chavez established himself as an All-Western Athletic Conference selection, and junior Kaitlynn Tuey was named honorable mention during a WAC meet on Thursday evening.
The Lady Panthers finished second with 67 points, while the boys finished fourth with 91.
Chavez was the top finisher for Great Bend, turning in a time of 17 minutes, 22 seconds for third place.
“I was disappointed with where we placed,” GBHS head coach Todd Kaiser said of the Panthers. “I thought the boys could challenge Liberal for second place and finish third at the worst.
“We need to regroup and get focused for (Class 5A) regionals.”
Tuey finished seventh, crossing the finish line at 17:19.
Kaiser said he was happy with how the Lady Panthers competed.
“That’s about where I figured they would place,” Kaiser said. “They were up against a really good Garden City team. A perfect score is 15, and they got a 19.
“If we can’t be best, we want to be second best.”
Great Bend hosts a Class 5A regional meet on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Barton Lake Golf Course.
The girls race will start at 11 a.m., with the boys starting at 11:30.
Schools in attendance will be Hays, Liberal, Maize South, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South and Valley Center.
