GARDEN CITY — The Great Bend High School Lady Panthers were edged by Maize South at the Garden City tournament on Saturday.
They finished second in a field of 12 teams.
“We were happy with how we finished,” GBHS head coach Shannon Schartz said. “I think Maize South is ranked sixth or seventh in the state in Class 5A, so we did pretty good hanging with them. We had a couple of wins against them.”
Macy Moyers captured first place as Great Bend’s No. 2 singles player, beating a Maize South player in comeback fashion.
Down 5-0 in the first set. Moyers raced back to force a tiebreaker, winning 8-6 to claim the Set 1. She won 6-0 in the second.
“She just showed a lot of patience,” Shannon Schartz said. “Her consistency improved. It was a super comeback.
“She ended up coming all the way back, and then completely dominated the second set.”
No. 1 doubles duo Jami McVay and Brianna Schartz also seized first place, beating a Maize South duo in a super tiebreaker third set, 10-8.
Morgan Francis finished second in the No. 1 singles competition, and the Lady Panthers No. 2 doubles team, Stephanie Langer and Paola Ramirez, finished fifth.
“I was real proud of how the girls played today,” Shannon Schartz said. “I was especially proud of the two wins against Maize South. That could help us in our (5A) regionals. ”
The Lady Panthers are off until Saturday when they travel to McPherson for a tournament, starting at 8 a.m.
