LARNED — Larned used a 22-7 first quarter run to set the tone of its first-round victory over Ellinwood in the Keady Basketball Classic Monday as they cruised to a 66-27 victory.
Larned’s suffocating full-court, man-to-man defense caused havoc for Ellinwood, resulting in nine first half turnovers as the Indians surged to a 36-18 halftime lead.
Larned scored the first 15 points after the halftime break, racing to a 62-26 lead that resulted in a running clock in the fourth quarter.
Ellinwood’s 2-3 zone proved no more than a nuisance as the Indians started out by raining threes and then picked apart the interior of the defense in the second half.
“I was pleased with our ball movement,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. “Most of the time we found the open man and made a good pass to get a good shot. We are getting better at recognizing the holes in a zone defense. Speaking of defense, I thought we were very good tonight.”
Ellinwood hit 5 of 10 free throws but had only Nathan Monday in double figures with 11. David Hammeke added seven and Keaton Robl and Luke Wondra chipped in four apiece.
Larned (2-0) was led by DaMontay Phillips with 14, Thomas Harmon with 11 and Mason Perez with 10. Chance Sanger and Brock Skelton added eight apiece.
Larned will meet Macksville at 6:30 p.m Friday in the semifinals. Macksville defeated Spearville 44-38 in a low scoring game Monday.
