LARNED — The Larned girls are fast becoming the Cardiac Kids for coach Ashley Crosby as they once again used last-second heroics for a 51-50 overtime victory over Smoky Valley in Friday’s Central Kansas League basketball game.
In overtime, Larned converted seven of eight free throws to carve out the victory. Haley Skelton rebounded her own miss with 5.9 seconds remaining in overtime and was fouled, with Larned trailing 50-49. She calmly made both free throws to lead 51-50.
Smoky Valley then missed a long 3-point attempt and Larned had the improbable win.
“On a night when we didn’t shoot well, the girls found a way to get it done. We won the turnover battle and that was big.”
In regulation, Smoky Valley led 44-42 lead with 8.5 seconds left after two free throws by Kate Deterding. Larned’s Ivory Muldrow scored a runner as the buzzer went off, sending the game into overtime at 44-44.
Larned made one of nine from the charity stripe in the fourth period while Smoky Valley made six of seven to take the lead.
Larned (11-8, 5-4 CKL) remains tied with Haven for the No. 1- seed at the Class 4A-Div. 2 Pratt substate. Haley Skelton (18), Kelsey Parr (13) and Katie Fischer (11) scored in double figures and Fischer grabbed nine rebounds. The Indians travels to Lyons Tuesday.
Smoky Valley (6-12, 3-5 CKL) was led by Kate Deterding’s 21 points but no other Viking scored in double figures. Leading scorer Katie Bellah was held to five points.
