LIBERAL — Liberal’s baseball team overpowered Great Bend 11-1 and 14-2 with timely hitting and efficient pitching to sweep a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Redskins roughed up Great Bend’s top two pitchers Logan Perry (2-4) and Bryce Lytle (2-2) with big innings.
No. 3 seed Liberal (11-5, 3-3 WAC) and Great Bend (7-11, 2-6 WAC) could meet again next week in Class 5A baseball regionals at Maize High. The Panthers are scheduled to play Larned at home Thursday. At the moment, the Panthers would be seeded seventh and play No. 2 Maize.
LHS 11, PANTHERS 1 — Starter Logan Perry yielded seven runs in three innings and the Redskins scored in all six innings.
Lytle’s groundball scored Tristan Mitchell with the Panthers’ fifth-inning run after a walk and single by Konner Ireland.
Liberal’s Francisco Terrazas entered the doubleheader with a .139 batting average and raised his average to .244 with five conecutive base hits. Terrazas, Alex Carrillo and Cole Evans each drove in two runs.
LHS 14, PANTHERS 2 — Great Bend produced two runs when Brayden Smith’s single drove home Lytle in the fourth inning. Koy Brack, who had singled, scored on an error. But Liberal reliever Braxton Hyde struck out Brice Kaiser, Logan Perry and Payton Mauler to work out of further trouble. Hyde struck out six batters in two innings.
ace pitcher Lytle failed to get out of a nine-run third inning. Cole Evans finished off the Panthers with a three-run homer, a triple and double with six RBIs. Cesar Burciaga had three hits and two runs batted in.
