LYONS — Behind the floor play and scoring of senior Ruth Pineda, the Lyons Lions defeated the Larned girls 50-42 Tuesday in a Central Kansas League basketball game.
Larned’s Ivory Muldrow scored 14 points while Kelsey Parr chipped in 11 and Haley Skelton nine. Larned (11-9, 5-5 CKL) plays Nickerson (6-13) March 3 at the Pratt 4A-Div. 2 basketball substate. Larned beat Nickerson 43-36 Jan. 31.
Larned and Lyons battled to a near standoff in the first quarter with Lyons ahead 13-12. Pineda scored 10 first-half points for a 26-21 halftime lead, spurred by a decided rebounding edge.
Lyons led by eight points in the third quarter. Larned closed within 46-42 on a Haley Skelton layup with under two minutes left. Lyons converted six free throws in the final minutes.
Lyons dominated the boards 38-21, including 18 offensive rebounds that resulted in putback scores.
Ruth Pineda led the Lions with 16 points and 6-1 freshman Kristina Head added 14 points. Lyons (6-14, 4-6 CKL) earned two close wins over Larned.
