TOPEKA — Great Bend High School freshman Macy Moyers advanced to today’s medal rounds of the Class 5A state tennis tournament.
Moyers will continue play today at Kossover Tennis Center at 11 a.m. against Arkansas City’s Heidi Klaassen.
“She’s been playing some of her best tennis all year,” GBHS head coach Shannon Schartz said of Moyers, who reinjured an ankle during last week’s regional in Valley Center where she finished third.
“Her ankle is bothering her a little, but not as much as last Saturday.”
Moyers won her first-round match, beating Salina South’s Katie Siemsen 6-3, 6-1.
The Lady Panthers singles player then fell to Allie Schulte of Kapaun Mt. Carmel 6-1, 6-1.
She then overcame two players in nine-game pro-set style consolation bracket, topping Marcy Cuestos (9-5) of Maize South and Serena Wong (9-2) of Newton.
Moyers secured herself a medal, guaranteeing herself a finish between fifth and 12th.
“She’s going to medal as a freshman,” Schartz said. “I think she’s the first freshman from Great Bend to medal at state.
“It’s a good accomplishment.”
