Great Bend pitcher Hunter Marcum was close to perfection in a dominating 8-0 and 11-0 sweep of Liberal High School. She struck out 18 batters and retired 21 of 22 batters in a no-hit opener. Kaeleah Chaloupek reached on a hit batter.
Marcum recorded eight more strikeouts in an 11-0 run-rule in the nightcap. She yielded a third-inning hit to Tierra Stoney.
Great Bend (3-1, 2-0 WAC) won its Western Athletic League softball opener.
PANTHERS 8, REDSKINS 0 — Marcum recorded 18 outs on strikeouts to totally overpower Liberal. Lancie Lanning, Alexia Torres and Hannah Chacon hit groundballs to shosttop Shailey Clark.
Emma Cape scored on Aleah Urban’s second-inning groundout. Baylee Beck scored on back-to-back third-inning errors.
Courtesy runner Alysaa Keller, Urban and Kendal Sell scored fourth inning runs with no hits, two walks and two errors for a 5-0 lead. Brooklyn Burkhart, Marcum, Urban singled and Sell capped a three-run fifth inning with a two-run single.
PANTHERS 11, REDSKINS 0 — Three runners reached base off Marcum in the second game.
Cape and Allison Neeland delivered run-scoring hits in a three-run first inning that started with singles by Sell, Aleah Urban and Cape.
Sell’s single drove home Urban for a 4-0 lead after two innings. Jenna Mauler’s RBI single keyed a two-run third inning when Kaylee Unruh singled and Cape walked.
A five-run fourth set up the run-rule victory. Kailee McMullen, Sell, Urban, runner Baylee Beck and Cape scored runs. Urban and Cape drove in runs.
