CLAFLIN – The Central Plains Oilers played perfect offense with seven touchdowns and finished off Macksville 58-12 with a defensive score to end Friday’s Eight-Man I football playoff game.

Alex Hickel scored three touchdowns and six Oilers scored touchdowns, highlighted by a game-ending 50-yard interception return by Kade Beck.

The Oilers’ big-play threat Alex Barton caught a 41-yard touchdown and soared for three receptions for 105 yards. Barton is always happy when Oilers quarterback Myles Menges throws the football.

“I give all the credit to my quarterback Myles Menges,” Barton said.  “He’s putting the football in the perfect spot for me. He’s outstanding.  I just have to go out and catch the football. It’s exciting when I hear those pass plays called.”

The Oilers rushed for 179 yards and exhibited excellent offensive balance. Offensive guard Mason Doll recovered a fumble by Hickel for the Oilers’ first touchdown.

“We ran traps, counters and put hits on their defense,” said Central Plains coach Chris Steiner. “We challenged our offensive line and they jumped to the challenge. We answered the call.”

The Mustangs gained 13 yards rushing. Barton and Brett Liebl combined to sack Macksville quarterback Kody Mead. Dylan Lemieux had 11 tackles, three for losses.

“We’re happy with the way we played and how well we practiced all week,” Steiner said. “They may have better athletes at receiver. Our communication in the secondary was so good that we were calling out every play.”

No. 3 ranked Central Plains (9-1) travels to Spearville (10-0) for a quarterfinal game Nov. 10. The Oilers and Spearville have met three times in the playoffs.

Macksville (7-3) closed within 22-12 when Karson Waters jumped to beat Devin Ryan on a spectacular 39-yard touchdown reception. Mustang quarterback Kody Mead completed 10 passes for 105 yards. Waters caught six passes for 72 yards.

“The guys work hard on our passing game,” said Macksville coach Chet Skinner. “They understand how to fill the gaps and our quarterback threw the ball well.”

But the Mustangs were unable to get defensive stops as the Oilers’ speed and depth proved too much to handle. The teams combined for five touchdowns in 51/2 minutes after Mead scored on a 1-yard dive.

Macksville scored on four consecutive drives for a 50-12 lead when Kade Beck’s interception ended the game.

“We came against a good, well-disciplined football team,” Skinner said. “They made fewer mistakes. They are very skilled and play a physical style that’s hard to match. You think you’ve blocked one guy and another guy hits you.”
