CENTRAL PLAINS 64, MACKSVILLE 62
GREENSBURG — Alex Hickel stole the basketball on the game’s final play to preserve Central Plains’ 64-62 overtime victory over league rival Macksville in the Class 2A Greensburg basketball substate. Jacob Rein’s pass intended for Karson Waters was stolen by Hickel.
Macksville’s Rein sank two free throws to send the game to overtime after he scored seven points and fed Diego Delgadillo with an assist in the final minutes of regulation for a 54-54 tie.
In overtime, Hickel scored on a 3-point play and Brett Liebl scored two inside baskets. Rein answered with a basket and assist and Delgadillo scored four points in overtime to slice the lead to 63-62. Hickel converted a free throw with 14 seconds left in overtime.
Liebl (18), Hickel (17), Alex Barton (15) and Devin Ryan (12) scored in double figures. The Oilers outscored the Mustangs 17-14 in the fourth quarter and 10-8 in overtime. The Oilers (17-5) will meet rival St. John (21-1) in Saturday’s substate championship game for the third time in the past four years. St. John has won nine of the past 12 meetings with the Oilers.
Macksville (15-7) was paced by Rein with 27 points and six assists. Delgadillo scored 16 points and Brigdon Russell dished out five assists. The Mustangs converted 9 of 23 3-pointers.
