GREENSBURG – The Central Plains seniors earned their 100th career girls basketball victory with a 68-34 victory over Kinsley in Saturday’s Class 2A Greensburg substate.
The No. 1 ranked Oilers (23-0) own a 100-1 record over the past four years with their loss against Ellinwood. The three-time defending state champions will earn the top seed in the Class 2A state tournament at Manhattan’s Bramlage Coliseum.
“That’s quite an achievement for our senior class,” said Central Plains coach Pat Stiles. “What’s amazing is our last six substate games have been played with a running clock in the fourth quarter. That’s hard to achieve.”
The Oilers play Chase County (15-8) at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bramlage Coliseum. In other first-round games, it's Valley Falls (20-3) against Elbing Berean Academy (19-4), Alma-Wabaunsee (21-2) against Pittsburg Colgan (15-7) and Meade (21-2) against Hill City (17-6).
Point guard Emily Ryan scored 22 points in addition to several assists. Kylee Kasselman worked inside for a season high 20 points.
The Oilers’ trapping defense converted several of Kinsley’s 28 turnovers into easy transition scores.
“We’ve worked really hard on our defense, and we’ve improved a lot since the start of the season,” Kasselman said. “It’s been a lot of fun having a player like Emily Ryan come in. She’s got a great positive attitude and makes every one of us better players. We’re a good strong team.”
Kinsley (14-9) drilled seven 3-pointers and Scout Frame worked inside for a 3-point play in a10-point night. Rylee Gleason scored 10 points and Gisel Holguin converted a trio of 3-pointers.
The Oilers were tied 6-6 when they rolled to a 20-3 scoring run for a 26-9 lead. Emily Ryan scored 20 first-half points in addition to several nifty assists to Kasselman.
“My job is working really hard to post up inside,” Kasselman said. “Emily will find you with the pass. Sometimes, she will surprise you with the pass.”
The Oilers managed 7 of 19 shooting in the first quarter before the defense triggered a 42-19 halftime lead.
“We started out zone because Kinsley drives the ball so hard to the basket,” said coach Stiles. “We didn’t want to get in foul trouble. But we knew they had great shooters who could make some 3-pointers.”
When the Oilers switched to their pressure man-to-man defense, the Coyotes committed nine turnovers without a score for seven minutes. The Oilers stretched their lead to 59-22 with a 17-3 third-quarter scoring edge.
“When we played man-to-man, the girls played terrific defense,” Stiles said. “We shut them out for several minutes. Our defense really set our offense up for success.”
The Oilers used their vintage teamwork for effective passing and quality shots.
“It’s a privilege to coach these girls because they play the game the right way,” Stiles said. “They are a special group to coach.”
