BIRD CITY — The Otis-Bison High School gridiron gang left Bird City with another lop-sided victory.
This time in a game against Cheylin that ended before regulation time was up due to the 45-point rule with the score of 51-6.
The win puts the Otis-Bison Cougars one step closer to the Eight-Man Division-II state championship game, which will be at Newton on Nov. 20.
“Our line played really well today,” Otis-Bison head coach Travis Starr said. “Both on offense and defense, the line really stepped up today.”
Patrick Piper led the Otis-Bison defense with 10 tackles and two pass deflections. Dominic Trapp added nine tackles and Michael Hlavaty finished the game with seven.
“Defensively, we just did great,” Starr said. “We were able to stop the run. We just shut them down.”
Otis-Bison held Cheylin to 180 yards of total offense, nine first downs and six points, which they scored in the fourth quarter.
The Otis-Bison offense was led by Piper as well. The junior running back finished the game with 152 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
On his heels was Hlavaty, who sprinted across the goal line four times on his way to 103 yards.
Dylan Wissman added 22 yards on four carries to bring the team’s total to 285 rushing yards.
“When we needed big plays, they both can come in and run well,” Starr said of the Piper-Hlavaty duo. “Wissman also got us some key yardage in the game.
“As the game went on, the 2-yard and 3-yard gains slowly start to grow and the running game really opened up.”
Next Friday, Otis-Bison will play Ashland, who beat Thunder Ridge 28-22 on Saturday, for a trip to the state championship.
