HAYS – Great Bend starter Colin Hall threw five shutout innings after a three-run inning in a 77-pitch outing to upset state-ranked Hays-Thomas More 7-3 in Tuesday’s opening game. The Monarchs (9-1) won the nightcap 7-2. Great Bend (4-6) plays Colby at home Friday.
GREAT BEND 7, TMP 3 (G1) – Hall was flawless with seven strikeouts after the Monarchs struck for three second-inning runs. Adam Gottschalk, Trent Mayo and Gavin Schumacher drove in Monarchs runs.
Dalton Bieker raced around the bases on a stolen base and two wild pitches in the third inning. Eddie Bujanda scored on a wild pitch to ignite a five-run fourth inning. Townshend Kurth scored on an error for a 3-3 tie. Alex Schremmer’s two-run single scored Hall and Riley Smith for a 5-3 lead. Chance Perry scored on a wild pitch for a 6-3 lead on Koy Brack’s strikeout.
TMP 7, GREAT BEND 2 (G2) – Eddie Bujanda’s RBI single scored Schremmer in the third inning. Joey Soupiset’s RBI single scored Koy Brack in the fifth inning. Dalton Bieker held the Monarchs scoreless for four innings.
Gavin Schumacher scored on a bases-loaded walk and three runs scored when Eston Brown’s fly ball was misplayed for a 4-0 lead. Werth’s double scored Schumacher for a 5-0 lead. Luke Ruder’s two-run double scored Chase Werth and Creighton Renz for a 7-0 lead.
