Panther bowlers sweep 5A titles

SALINA — The Great Bend girls and boys bowling teams swept the Class 5A regional titles Thursday at All-Star Lanes. Both Panther teams beat Salina South on their home lanes.
Medalist Allie Brodick (635), runner-up Kylynn Keeler (604), 10th-place medalist Jordan Vsetecka (522) led the Panthers to a 2,306 series and 790 Baker total for a winning 3,096 pins. The Panthers finished as Class 5A state runner-up last year. Andover Central (2,799) and Salina South (2,795) qualified their teams for Class 5A state at Wichita’s Rock Lanes.
Vsetecka placed sixth and Brodrick finished ninth at 5A state last year.
Third-place finisher Jacob Holden (704), fifth-place medalist T.J. Roberts (693) paced the Panthers to a 2,740 series and 837 Baker score for 3,577 pins. Holden rolled games of 225, 269 and 210. Salina South (3,451) and Wichita Heights (3,347) qualified their teams for the 5A state tournament.
“We are state-bound and Panther Proud,” said Great Bend coach Mike Perry. “Both teams competed extremely hard. I’m so proud of the way we came together and completed the regional sweep.”
The Great Bend girls built a 114-pin lead and dominated the Baker format 790-607 over runner-up Andover Central. Elsi Miller (508), Jessica Disque (498) and Lexi Fox (423) also competed.
The Panther boys built a 159-pin series lead and fired a 837 Baker total. Western Athletic Conference champion Jordan Black (638), Kameron Keener (634), Brodie Owens (610) and Blake Sheets (571) also competed for the Panthers.
“This is a great group of young people to coach,” Perry said. “I give a ton of credit to my assistant coach Jim Mayberry. He is the best in the state of Kansas.”
