Great Bend’s regional bowling runner-up Kameron Keener sports a Clark Kent-type look. The bespectacled Keener bowled like Superman Friday with a 694 series that sparked the Panthers to the 5A regional bowling title at Walnut Lanes. Keener recorded games of 249, 222 and 223 while recording three strikes to end his first and third games.
Keener finished one pin behind McPherson’s medalist Taylor Miller (695, 235-202-258). Keener started fast and marked in 29 of 30 frames with perfect finishes in the first and third games. Keener stayed hot in the Baker format by marking in all eight frames.
“I was really pleased with how I bowled today,” Keener said. “I found a good spot on the lanes today and stuck with it. There wasn’t as much oil as we normally see, so I adjusted. It took me about three or four practice shots to find my line today.”
Keener earned first-team All-WAC honors and led a trio of top 10 finishers. Bryce Moore (627) and Corbin Stanley (627) tied for eighth. Moore rolled games of 190, 213 and 224. Stanley rolled games of 223, 213 and 191. Also scoring for the Panthers were WAC Player of the Year Jordan Black (541) and A.J. Roberts (523). Black rescued one Baker game with three consecutive strikes. Moore marked in seven of eight Baker frames.
“We were pleased by how well our team played today,” Keener said.
The Panthers shot a three-game series of 2,594 and 3,349 pins after four Baker games were counted. The Panthers will compete at the 5A state bowling tournament March 2 at Wichita’s Northrock Lanes. AVCTL champion McPherson (3,326) and Salina South (3,075) captured the other team berths.
Great Bend’s boys earned their seventh state bowling trip and has qualified every time at Walnut Bowl.
“I’m thrilled with the way our boys team came out and completed today,” said Great bend coach Mike Perry. “We punched our ticket to the state tournament by being the best team. Our regional scores are right with the best teams. I’m looking forward to the boys making a deep run next week.”
Great Bend’s regional runner-up Jordan Vsetecka (549, 190-206-153) and teammate Lexy Fox (518, 144-176-198) earned individual berths for 5A state. Salina South (2,779), Buhler (2,728) and Maize High (2,672) earned team berths.
Great Bend finished fourth (2,570) after losing 113 pins to Maize on the four-game Baker frames. The Panthers lost momentum after a 30-minute delay for a lane malfunction. The Panthers led Maize 2,022 (643-721-658) to 2,011 after three games. But Maize shot 661 in the four-game Baker series while Great Bend managed a 548 score (123-137-136-152) to gain 113 pins.
Vsetecka tried to personally rescue the Panthers with spectacular Baker frames. She recorded eight strikes and struck four consecutive times in the first game. Fox rallied with seven marks in eight Baker frames, but the other Panthers sputtered in the Baker format.
But Perry thought the Panthers lost their momentum after the 30-minute delay.
“It was great to see the girls compete today,” Perry said. “I’m very proud of the Lady Panthers effort. We finished fourth and just came up a little short on experience.”
The Panthers’ other players were Sarah Mehlhaff 451, Brynn Boxberger 442, Abby Miller 441 and Zujeiry Garcia 397.
