MCPHERSON — Great Bend ninth-grader Cole Streck continues to shine with a hard-earned 7-over-par 77 that placed seventh at Thursday’s McPherson Invitational Golf Tournament.
Streck played his final 16 holes at Turkey creek Golf Course in 4-over-par after starting with a double bogey and bogey.
“Placing seventh as a freshman in a 15-school tournament is a good accomplishment,” said Great Bend coach Travis McAtee. “Cole played solid after a rough two-hole start. Going 3-over after two holes, he played the last 16 holes in 4-over par.
Golfers played in perfect weather — 70 degrees with light wind.
“We had a beautiful day to play,” McAtee said. “Turkey Creek is a challenging course with several water hazards in play. It was nice to have Mother Nature’s cooperation Thursday.
Great Bend placed seventh (365). Also posting scores were Jayson Effertz (90), Brantley Baldwin (94), Cal Dunekack (104), Ishmael Rodriquez (112), and Grant Keller (126).
“We continue to be led in scoring by four freshmen,” McAtee said. “I’m excited to see how much better they will get as time goes on. We’re looking to fill our fifth and sixth varsity spots with better scores as the season continues. We have a few guys still competing for the positions.”
The Panthers compete at Hays April 16.
Defending 2A state champion Salina Sacred Heart cruised to first place (300) with Hays High (312) finishing second. Hays High’s Tradgon McCrae (72) edged a trio of Sacred Heart Knights for medalist honors.
