After a challenging schedule, Great Bend teammates Citlali Sanchez and Mayra Ramirez were more than happy to share the spotlight after Tuesday’s 7-1 soccer victory over Wichita Southeast.
Sanchez, an up-and-coming star, matched her teammate with three goals — a double “hat trick.” Diana Quiroz added the Panthers’ other goal.
Sanchez opened the scoring with two goals and closed the scoring with her third goal in the closing minutes for her first three-goal game.
“That was a lot of fun today,” Sanchez said. “We were communicating really well today and moving the ball.”
The speedy Ramirez played everywhere, running the Buffaloes’ defense wild. She constantly shifted into high gear when she saw her scoring opportunities. Ramirez scored her trio of goals and set up her teammates for scoring chances.
“We wanted to win this one for our seniors,” Ramirez said. “It was a lot of fun out there today.”
After a 45-minute lightning delay because of threatening weather, it was a rare opportunity for the Panthers to roll against an overmatched team behind a 30 mph south wind. The Panthers dominated time of possession and scored five first-half goals.
“We played really well today,” said Great Bend coach Margarita Ayala. “We were communicating really well today. We really took advantage of the wind that first half.”
The Panther seniors played their final home game — goalie Ellie Anspaugh, Esmeralda Delgadillo, Abby MacKinny, Diana Quiroz and Valeria Castillo.
The Buffaloes played inspired soccer after trailing 5-0 at halftime. They outplayed the Panthers at times and gained time of possession. Cassie Agnew scored the Buffaloes’ goal on an assist by Madison Johnson.
The Buffaloes were an interesting team. Buffalo goalie Cheyenne Dyke is deaf and communicates through hand signals. Rama Alashgar wore a head covering as a sign of her religious beliefs.
