PARK CITY – Great Bend’s No. 3 state-ranked Keaton Sander (138) upset the No. 2-ranked wrestler and captured three wins to sweep into the 138-pound finals at the Class 5A state wrestling championship.

Sander upset No. 2 state-ranked Jarrett Bendure (33-6) 7-6 of Mill Valley in Friday’s semifinals. He’ll meet Arkansas City’s Jake Beeson (41-2) in Saturday’s championship match. Beeson beat Sander 5-1 for the regional final last week.

Sander downed KC Turner’s Tanner Sutton 8-0 in the first round. Sander edged Wichita Carroll’s Conor Murphy 3-1 in the quarterfinals in a rematch of their regional match. Sander is a four-time state qualifier who has placed fourth and sixth in Class 5A the past two seasons.

Two-time state qualifier Eric Vazquez (28-5, 120) rallied with three wins in the consolation bracket to move into medal position against Newton’s Logan Treaster. After Liles lost 7-2 to Logan Elbrader of St. Thomas Aquinas, he beat Lansing’s Tyler Williams, 5-0; Blue Valley Southwest’s Joe Dennison, 4-2; and Andover’s Carter Guyer, 3-0.

 

Gage Fritz (145), Noah Presson (285) and Drew Liles (106) all lost second-round matches. The Panthers won four of eight first-round matches.

Fritz defeated Mill Valley’s Joey Gray, 9-7. Fritz lost a hard-fought 3-2 match to Maize’s Duwayne Villapando.

 

Presson pinned Mill Valley’s Alec Derritt in 4:55, but was pinned in 43 seconds by No. 1-ranked Pittsburg’s Kayne Hutchison. Hutchison is last year’s 220-pound state champion. Presson pinned Carroll’s Sean Hallacy in 4:11 to move against DeSoto’s Lawson Marshall.

 

Liles lost 7-0 to Hunter Bindi of St. Thomas Aquinas. Liles pinned St. James’ T.J. Miller in 2:44. Liles lost 7-4 to Shawnee Heights’ Fred Maisberger.

 

Carsyn Schooler (113) lost 10-2 to No. 3 state-ranked Dawson Podlena of Topeka Seaman. Schooler beat KC Sumner’s Peyton Richardson 3-0 and KC Schlagle’s Jonan Andrew 4-2 before losing 8-2 to Shawnee Heights’ Barrett Stickelman 8-2.
