GODDARD — After spotting Goddard a three-run lead, Great Bend’s baseball team outscored the Lions 17-2 to roll to a doubleheader sweep 8-4 and 9-1 Wednesday. The Panthers (5-1) play at home Tuesday against Hays High at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
Goddard led 3-0 when the first game was stopped by rain March 28 and it was resumed 22 days later. The most interesting aspect was Great Bend pitcher Logan Perry started both games.
Panther Brayden Smith continued a red-hot start with four hits in the nightcap. Smith is batting .684 — 13 for 19.
GREAT BEND 8, GODDARD 4 — Reliever Eddie Bujanda threw six innings with six strikeouts and no earned runs.
The Panthers rallied for seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings after hitting into two double plays with a runner picked off base in the third.
Logan Perry’s bases-loaded walk forced home Bryce Lytle. Brice Kaiser’s double scored Smith and Logan Perry and Eddie Bujanda scored the fourth run for a 4-3 lead.
In the fifth, Lytle’s sacrifice fly scored Konner Ireland and Eddie Bujanda’s single scored Payton Mauler and Logan Perry for a 7-4 lead. Logan Perry scored the Panthers’ final run on Brice Kaiser’s seventh-inning groundout.
GREAT BEND 9, GODDARD 1 — Left-handed pitcher Logan Perry (2-0) bounced back nicely after yielding a game-winning home run to Gavin Schumacher of Thomas More Prep Tuesday. Perry has struck out 16 batters in 15 innings. He lowered his ERA to 1.86 in three appearances.
Smith, Eddie Bujanda and Chance Perry each drove in two runs. The Panthers scored six first-inning runs. Bujanda and Chance Perry delivered two-RBI hits and Smith and Koy Brack drove in runs.
Ireland’s singled home Brack in the third inning. Smith’s single drove home Mauler in the fourth inning. Cory Burnham’s RBI single scored Brack in the fifth inning.
