The Great Bend High School boys’ soccer team edged Manhattan 2-1 on Saturday at Cavanaugh Field.
The Panthers advance to 7-1 overall.
“I’ve been here for five years, and we’ve never done this,” GBHS head coach Gus Prieto said. “The team is playing really well right now.”
GBHS scored first, 10 minutes into the first half.
Noel Rodriguez beat the Manhattan goalkeeper on a penalty kick, which was given to the Panthers after a defender fouled Jose Morales inside the penalty box.
Manhattan tied the game 10 minutes later, leaving the score 1-1 at the half.
“I think we were tired,” Prieto said. “After we play three games this week, we were a little tired. I had to use 19 players today. It was pretty even in the first half, but in the second half, we controlled the ball probably 35 minutes.
“In the last 15 minutes, we had a lot of opportunities to score, but we missed a lot.”
Mario Espino scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half.
Ivan Gallindo got a pass to Oscar Torres, who took a shot from the top of the penalty box. The shot ricocheted off of the goal’s crossbar and Espino headed the rebound into the net.
GBHS travels to Garden City on Tuesday afternoon at 4.
