Seven Hoisington wrestlers win first-round matches

HAYS — Hoisington’s Ball brothers got off to a rousing start in the Class 3-1A state wrestling championship.
Brandon Ball, a three-time Class 3-1A state wrestling champion,  pinned Riley County’s Wes March in 2:11 in his first 138-pound match Friday at Fort Hays State University.
His brothers also won first-round matches. Seven Cardinals won first-round matches.
No. 3 Jonathan Ball (145) defeated Cherryvale’s Alex Van Rooy, 15-0.  No. 6 Christopher Ball (152) pinned Plainville’s Trevor Houser in 3:28.
Hoisington’s Hunter Hanzlick (170) pulled the biggest surprise with a 7-4 upset victory over No. 6 Effingham’s Joey Landwehr.
No. 3 Landen Urban defeated Eureka’s Grayson Pryce, 7-5. No. 6 Chance Boor (195) defeated Caney Valley’s Wyatt Anderson, 10-2. Tanner Cassity (113) pinned Sublette’s Alex Depperschmidt in 2:55.
Hoisington’s Sean Urban (160) and Austin McHenry (182) and Justin Bradley (220) lost first-round matches. McHenry’s loss was a heartbreaker, a 3-2 decision to Onaga’s Kyle Amos (40-4).
After the first round, Norton scored 28.5 points and Hoisington scored 20.5 points.
