Fall scrimmages set
for tonight at GBHS
The annual fall sports scrimmages will get take place tonight at Great Bend High School.
The Great Bend Lady Panthers volleyball teams will start things off at 6, with the freshman team scrimmaging until 6:20. From there the varsity and junior varsity will be put on display from 6:20 until 6:45. Admission is a bottle of Gatorade or bottled water.
The Panthers football teams kick off scrimmages at Memorial Stadium at 6:30, followed by the varsity and junior varsity at 7. Admission is a towel.
At 8:30, the varsity and junior varsity soccer teams will scrimmage at Memorial Stadium. Admission is either sports drinks or bottled water.

Great Bend JV competes in Lyons tennis meet
LYONS — The Great Bend High School junior varsity tennis team opened the fall season by subbing for the Panthers’ varsity in a varsity meet at Lyons.
“The girls were nervous about their first action of the year,” Great Bend head coach Shannon Schartz said. “They played hard and improved during the day. Summer (Hoss), Kaylee (Kershner) and Kalee (Maneth) were playing in their first competitive matches of their lives and did very well.
“The other three girls played in their first varsity action as we brought our junior varsity to this tournament. It was a good experience for the girls.”
Great Bend’s varsity is action next Thursday at the McPherson tournament, starting at 3 p.m.

The Scoreboard Show airing on Smoky Hills Public  Television
BUNKER HILL — Two preseason specials kick off the ninth season of The Scoreboard Show on Smoky Hills Public this week.
Smoky Hills Public Television, channels 8 and 9 in Great Bend, is broadcasting a total of four 30-minute specials, showcasing high school football teams throughout central and western Kansas. 
The pre-season coverage of the North Central Region is on Friday at 10:30 p.m., followed by the Southwest Region at 11 p.m. the same night. 
The program is a panel discussion of individuals that predict which teams they feel will finish at the top of their leagues and be state contenders.
Panel participants are John Baetz, editor of Kansas Pregame, the official print partner of Kpreps.com, the state’s only comprehensive preseason high school and college football magazine; Rich Epp, sports broadcaster for Kansas high schools and colleges; James Westling, program director of 92.7 “The Fan” Salina’s sports talk radio; and Larry Jantz, Kansas high school official, former coach, and sports broadcaster for Smoky Hills Public Television.

Larned girls golf team sets out on defending
state championship
LARNED — The Larned High School girls’ golf team, reigning state champs in Classes 3-2-1A, will open the 2010 season Monday at Buffalo Dunes Course in Garden City, starting at 3 p.m. It will be a nine-hole event.
The Lady Indians went 10-0 last year en route to the state title under head coach Toni Novotny. This year’s team has no seniors, as it will be a rebuilding year, according to Novotny.
