GBHS takes second
EMPORIA — The Great Bend High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams were on the road to compete in the Emporia Invitational on Saturday.
Great Bend’s girls’ team finished in second place with 76 points, 24 points behind first-place St. Thomas Aquinas.
“The girls finished second behind (St. Thomas) Aquinas, who’s the No. 1 team in 5A right now,” Panthers head coach Todd Kaiser said. “It was a pretty impressive performance for the girls.
“It was one outstanding performance as a team.”
Rubi Torres led the Lady Panthers team with a second-place finish, finishing in a time of 16 minutes.
Great Bend’s boys finished 10th out of 13 teams. Chon Chavez led the Panthers, finishing 26th in a time of 17:44.
“The boys showed improvement, and that’s all I can ask of them,” Kaiser said. “A lot of them had season-best times and the Emporia course is a little more difficult than ours is, so for them to improve on a more difficult course, it shows positive steps.”

Another hole-in-one
for Great Bend’s Vernon
Using an 8-iron on Hole No. 4 at Stoneridge Golf Club, Tom Vernon of Great Bend recorded a hole-in-one on Saturday.
Witnessess included Tom Berschmeidt, Randy Wetzel and Tom Harris.
It is Vernon’s fifth hole-in-one in his lifetime.
Panthers’ soccer team
falls in title game
The Great Bend High School boys’ soccer team lost to Titans Classic host Wichita South, 4-2, in the championship game Saturday.
The Panthers were without two of their starters on Saturday.
Kevin Manase, the only senior on the team, didn’t play because his religion prevents it on Saturdays, and Oscar Torres, who scored five goals against Mulvane to start the tournament, was injured in the Panthers’ win against Circle on Wednesday.
“Somebody stepped on his ankle during the game,” Panthers head coach Gus Prieto said. “He told he wanted to play Saturday and we tried, but he wasn’t ready to play.”
The Titans were able to score quickly against the Panthers and finished the first half up 4-0.
“They got two goals against us in like five minutes,” Prieto said. “They were really fast and we just got behind.”
“In the last 30 minutes, we had like 10 chances to score but we didn’t,” Prieto said. “It was a really good game. We had a chance to win or at least tie.”
Hodgeman County’s Kreger ties national mark
In Week 1 of the prep football season, Hodgeman County High School running back Evan Kreger scored 10 touchdowns — all in the first half of a 74-8 victory over Pawnee Heights.
The game was called after the first two quarters because of the mercy rule, but that was all Kreger needed to set a Kansas Eight-Man record and tie the national record as recorded by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
The Kansas record was nine touchdowns, set by Bryan Kendall of Haviland in 1974. Brandon Major tied the record in 1994 while playing for Wilson.
Kreger joins five other players who hold the national record of 10 touchdowns in a game.
