St. John boys qualify for state basketball

INMAN — All-stater Dean Wade scored 20 points to lead No. 1 ranked St. John past Berean Academy 67-42 in the championship game of the Class 2A Inman basketball substate. The Tigers led 26-24 at halftime and outscored the Warriors 41-18 in the second half.
Jorge Calleros scored 13 points and Alexis Valenzuela added nine points.
Defending state champion St. John (23-0) plays Ellis (18-5) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Class 2A state tournament at Bramlage Coliseum.

PRATT — The Macksville girls and boys lost basketball substate championships Saturday at Skyline High School. The LaCrosse girls outlasted Macksville 34-28. The Skyline boys beat Macksville 42-27. Macksville’s boys upset top-seeded Otis-Bison 49-45.
Macksville’s girls (8-14) made an improbable run to the substate championship game for the second straight year. The Mustangs finished the season 6-2 over the last eight games.

LARNED — No. 1 ranked Holcomb rolled past Hugoton 69-28 in the championship game of the Class 4A-Div. 2 basketball substate. Holcomb led 43-11 at halftime.
Holcomb (21-1) was led by Trey Sleep with 17 points and Dalton Gottschalk with 15 points. Brandon Stegman scored 12 points. Conner VanCleave had 10 rebounds and eight points. Calen Rupp had six assists.

LARNED — Katy Heger scored 27 points as the No. 1 ranked Holcomb’s girls edge Pratt 50-47 in the finals of Class 4A-Div. 2 Larned basketball substate. Hugoton outscored Pratt 13-5 in the final minutes after trailing 42-39 with five minutes left. Amy Scott and Heger combined for seven points to regain the lead.
Pratt (16-6) made seven 3-pointers. Breann Becker led Pratt with 21 points.
