Tigers win relay with team effort
BY JIM MISUNAS
WICHITA – St. John Tiger Quincy Smith trailed Beloit St. John’s Adam Bates, but he was prepared for the moment in the 1A 3,200-meter boys relay.
Smith clocked a career-best split of 2:00.2 to run down Bates (2:03.7) for the Tigers’ gold medal in the 3,200 meters. Teammates Trey Fisher (2:01.5), Cashe McVey (2:07.3) and Mason Osborne (2:07.1) gave Smith the baton with a small deficit.
“I was behind, but I just wanted to stay close,” Smith said. “The second lap, I could hopefully outkick him. I came around him with about 100 meters left.”
The Tigers finished with a season-best 8:16.26 to cut another 12 seconds off their previous best time.
“When we ran 8:28 at the Central Prairie League meet, we cut 20 seconds off,” Smith said. “We knew we had the pieces together to put a good time together.”
Smith and Osborne were part of four state qualifying teams this year in cross country, basketball, golf and track. The Tigers won a state basketball championship when Smith was a ninth-grader. They won state cross country when Smith was a junior.
Smith enjoyed a strong day with a third place in the 400 (51.9), a fourth in the triple jump (41-8) and a third-place in the 1,600-meter relay (3:31.02) with Trey Fisher, Cashe McVey and Mason Osborne.
The Tigers scored 27 points to place eighth in 1A, won by South Gray (77 points).
