Three Panther wrestlers place at 5A state meet

PARK CITY — Three Great Bend High School wrestlers placed in the top six at the Class 5A State Tournament at Hartman Arena in Park City.
Great Bend’s Christian Rivas (160) placed fifth and teammates Keaton Sander (126) and Cody Liles (132) both placed sixth in their weight classes.
Rivas (20-9) beat Emporia’s Tucker Lee (25-26) 1-0 to earn fifth place. Rivas missed a chance to wrestle for third place with a 3-1 loss to Goddard’s Brett Woodruff (29-7).
Rivas beat Lansing’s Juston Smith in 4:39 in the first round. Rivas (17-8) lost to No. 4 ranked Jacob Smith (34-8) of KC Turner 4-2 in a hard-fought quarterfinal match.
No. 4 ranked Keaton Sander (126) finished sixth with a 1-0 loss to Topeka Seaman’s Khamin Crow (36-14), 1-0. Sander also lost his second to last match 1-0 to Andover’s Griffin Bossington. Sander (126) beat Pittsburg’s Wes Jameson, 5-2. Sander pushed No. 2 ranked Christian Bowen of Goddard (36-7), but lost 7-3 in the quarterfinals.
Great Bend’s No. 3 ranked Cody Liles (35-10) lost a tough 4-2 decision against No. 6 ranked Conor Murphy of Wichita Carroll in Friday’s opening round. But Liles rallied to win three matches to finish sixth. He lost 3-2 to Goddard’s Garrett Lange (40-11) for fifth place after losing 3-2 to Andover’s Jack Maki (33-8).
Unranked Eric Vazquez pulled off a major upset with an injury default against No. 5 ranked Jaelynn Gay of Topeka Seaman (32-11).  Vazquez (14-17) was pinned in 46 seconds by No. 2 ranked Logan Terrill (34-7) of Arkansas City.
No. 2 ranked Kendall Frame of Goddard (31-4) pinned Great Bend’s Hunter Gregg (145) in 1:24.
KC Schlagle’s No. 3 ranked Mason Turner pinned Eusebio Sierra (113) in 45 seconds.
