Dodge City Dual, Thursday
The Panthers pulled off a 32-30 victory over No. 3 ranked Class 6A Dodge City. Dodge City featured eight state-ranked wrestlers and Great Bend had four state-ranked wrestlers.
“It was great to see how mentally tough and competitive our kids were against Dodge City,” Broeckelman said. “Our conditioning, heart, and the fact that we did not back down is what won us this dual. Big props to our student section for coming out and supporting us. The chants and cheers helped us pull out the upset. Our kids came out to compete and show Kansas that we are on our way to climb back to the top.”
The dual match started at 145 pounds to have the final two matches
having 132-pound state-ranked Cody Liles versus Clay Weil and state-ranked 138-pound Keaton Sander versus Tylor Garcia.
“Montoya pulled out a victory with about 10 seconds left to put us within seven team points going into the final dual,” he said. “Liles and Sander pulled off big wins for the team. Liles picked up a fall over Wiel and Sander won in the final seconds 3-1.”
The Panthers squeezed out a victory.
“This dual was an all around team effort. We knew it was could be a tight dual if we could get some wins and bonus points in the upper weights.”
Great Bend won 10 of 15 junior varsity matches.
“Our junior varsity wrestled well and set the tone,” he said. “
They gained some great experience and won some hard fought battles. Our mental toughness won a lot of these matches in the 3rd period and in overtime.”
