BOYS
St. John 60, Spearville 46

ST. JOHN — After one quarter, the St. John High School boys’ basketball team was ahead 21-13, and the Tigers went on to win their first-round Class 1A Division-I sub-state game against Spearville on Tuesday.
Zach Minnis rang up 26 points, including 7 of 8 from the free-throw line and three 3-pointers.
Zuriel Reyes joined him in double digits with 12 points.
The Tigers will play Ashland at home in the second-round game on Friday night at 6.

Bucklin 56, Stafford 50
BUCKLIN — Bucklin put distance between it and Stafford in the second and fourth quarters to edge the Trojans from the Class 1A Division-II sub-state brackets on Tuesday.
The Trojans were led by Tanner Newell, who posted 29 points, including four 3-pointers.
Newell also grabbed five rebounds.
Alex Setter added 15 points and matched Newell’s team-high for rebounds with five of his own.

Quivira Heights 68, Natoma 40

BUSHTON — Quivira Heights took a 33-21 lead by halftime and claimed a first-round Class 1A Division-II sub-state win on Tuesday.
Gunner Phelan continues to lead the Thunderbirds, scoring 27 points.
Taylor Siemsen added 13 points, and Bryce Straub scored 11 points to join him in double figures.
Quivira Heights will play the No. 1-seeded Wilson on Friday in Hays at Felten Middle School.

Hoisington 74,
Southwestern Heights 57

HOISINGTON — Southwestern Heights scored 28 points in the final eight minutes but couldn’t catch Hoisington, which won its first-round Class 3A sub-state game.
Cody Stetler put in 22 points to lead the Cardinals.
Derrick Kaiser scored 14 points, and Luke Becker added 11 points.
Hoisington travels to the sub-state site in Larned to challenge Holcomb on Friday night at 7:30.
Otis-Bison 75,
Western Plains 25

OTIS — Otis-Bison was up 43-13 by halftime in the first-round Class 1A Division-II sub-state win on Tuesday.
The Cougars were led by Trevor Keller, who scored 18 points.
Jackie Cornwell added 14 points and Patrick Piper scored eight.
Otis-Bison advances to play Chase on Friday night at 7:30 in Hays at Felten Middle School.
