Wade shines at Central Kansas All Star Game

There was little doubt the player to watch at the fourth annual Central Kansas All-Star Game was Mr. Basketball in the state of Kansas – Dean Wade.

The St. John High School product did not disappoint. Not only did Wade win the slam dunk contest as expected he also won the 3-point contest. Then proceeded to put up 33 points and grab 18 rebounds in the game itself.

There was one thing different for Wade – his team suffered a loss. The National team beat Wade’s American team 116-96 at the Barton Gym on the campus of Barton Community College.

Wade, signed to play for Kansas State next season, led all scorers in the contest and was tabbed the MVP for the American team. The Nationals were led by Lawrence High product John Barbee who scored 21.

The high scoring contest saw the National team led 55-52 behind a barrage of 3-pointers. Cameron Hill of Cheney hit three treys in the opening half while Brandon Clark of Ell-Saline and Trent Webster of Hutchinson each added a pair. The National hit seven 3-pointers on in the half.

The American team knocked seven of its own – four of them by Wade. Koy Alexander of South Central High School added two and Central Plains Layne Bieberle hit another on his way to a 9-point first half.

But the second half belonged to the National team as it outscored the American team 61-44 in the final 20 minutes. In the process the National team made 10 more treys. Barbee led the way with 14 second-half points for the Nationals. Brett Crist of Quinter scored 11 second-half points as well.

Barbee finished the game with 21 points to pace a balanced attack from the Nationals. He was named MVP of the National squad. Crist added 17 and Hill 14 with Patterson and Webster 13 each as eight Nationals scored double figures.

Wade was joined in double figures by Alexander with 16, Bieberle with 13 and Tate Skinner of South Gray with 10.
