RUSSELL — It's over.

Phillipsburg's girls ended the nation's third-longest winning girls basketball streak in history with a 49-44 victory Friday over Central Plains Oilers in the Amos Morris Basketball Classic.

Phillipsburg's Taryn Sides scored 15 points and expertly directed the Panthers' offense with pin-point passing and ballhandling. Kay Pakkebier added 11 points.

The Panthers celebrated after ending the Oilers' 138-game winning streak. The Oilers' last loss was 66-58 to Ellinwood on Feb. 24, 2015. The Oilers beat the Panthers 57-37 in their closest margin of victory last year.

Oiler Brynna Hammeke scored 12 points and defensive standout Kassidy Nixon added nine points.

Central Plains coach Pat Stiles owns a  203-5 record with the Oilers with six consecutive state basketball championships.

“Phillipsburg is a great team and played extremely well and deserved to win,” Stiles told Catch-It-Kansas.com. “Playing a good team like Phillipsburg gives us much to learn from. I'd rather play tough competition like that then someone we’ll beat by 30-40.”

The Oiler seniors (80-1) lost their first game in their high school basketball careers.

"I’m proud of my girls," Stiles said. "These kids were part of what we’ve done in the past. Tomorrow, they’ll be ready to play because that’s how they are."

The Panthers employed pressure defense to outscore the Oilers 14-6 in the second period for a 28-23 halftime lead. The Panthers maintained  comfortable lead the rest of the game.

“The girls were focused and ready to go. We needed to be the aggressive team," said Phillipsburg coach Rachel Miller. “It was important to come out of halftime strong."

The Oilers have won six consecutive state basketball titles that was stopped last year when the Kansas State High School Actitities Association canceled the state tournament.
