PRATT — The No. 1 ranked 1A St. John Tigers captured first place at Thursday’s Pratt Invitational cross country meet keyed by fourth-place medalist Mason Osborne (17:55.0) and sixth-place medalist A.J. Miller (18:00.0).

The 71 varsity runners competed in sunny 70-degree weather, which made for ideal running conditions.

Other Tiger top 20 runners were Wrangler Walker, ninth, 18:39; Hunter Hanson 13th, 19:05; Cashe McVey, 16th, 19:14; and Uriel Calleros, 20th 19:20. The St. John Tigers will travel to the Sterling Invitational Oct. 4.

“I was very pleased with the way our boys competed today to get the win,” said St. John coach Joel Delp. “It was nice to get under 18 minutes. To have six runners in the top 20 is very good.  There will be some great runners next week at Sterling, so we need to continue to work hard and get faster.”

Larned’s Brayden Lothman earned fourth medalist (17:52.0) and Stafford’s Cayden Brozek placed 10th (18:45.0).

St. John’s Dalton Nemec captured the junior varsity boys race (19:59) and Dylan Reed finished fifth, 20:36.

GIRLS — Larned’s Cierra Nord earned ninth-medalist honors (22:57.0). Pratt’s girls (48 points) won the team division and South Central placed second (57).

The St. John girls were led by Jackie Rios, 26th (24:53) followed by Paige Doran, 31st (25:22) and Jaden Reed, 43rd (28:57).

Shayla Garcia made a return to running with a 12th-place finish (31:21) in the JV race.  Jordon Willinger finished 14th (32:35).

“The girls are starting to see their times fall,” Delp said. “The next two weeks of practice will be very important for them.”

Larned’s Aylice Clawson captured the junior varsity race (25:51.0).

MACKSVILLE MUSTANGS — The Macksville girls were led by 16th-place Abigail Ibarra, 23:48.0; 18th-place Itzel Garcia, 23:54.0; 32nd Lydia Mendez, 25:33.0; and 40th Caren Holguin, 27:47.0.

Macksville’s boys were paced by 35th Gabe Wolff, 20:21.0; 40th Kyler Evans, 20:48.0; 48th Andrew Cross, 21:20.0; and 56th Trey Britton, 22:08.0.

“It was really a nice day to run and our runners took advantage,” said Macksville coach Mike Hullman. “Almost all of our runners set new PRs for the season. Abigail Ibarra and Karen Holguin took more than three minutes for their new PRs.  Our mile splits are starting to drop like we want, just that the second mile split ran long on the course.”

Hullman said he’s pleased by the Mustangs’ hard work and progress.

“I’m surprised that we ran so well since we were coming off our toughest week of workouts,” Hullman said. “We’re starting to realize that working hard in practice is helping us drop time in our races. Hopefully that means that we will continue to challenge ourselves in our workouts so that we keep dropping time in the next few weeks leading up to regionals. We dropped to 1A and will go west to the Tribune-Greeley County regional.”

JUNIOR HIGH — In the 8th grade girls’, Hoisington’s Jayla Wyant earned medalist honors (14:43.0).

August Siefkes earned a fourth place medal with a time of 15:11.  Mackenzie Hacker finished 15th with a time of 18:00.

In the 7th grade boys’ race, St. John’s Quade Smith finished in 7th place with a time of 6:29.  Chris Fernandez finished in 28th place with a time of 9:51.

“Our junior high group has been working hard, and it is hard to believe that their final meet is next Thursday,” said coach Delp.
