ST. JOHN — St. John’s top two seniors were primed for encore track seasons when the Kansas State High School Activities Association canceled the season due to fear about the coronavirus.
Two-time state qualifier Erin Crissman placed fifth (34-71/2) and 14th in the 1A triple jump the past two years.
Regional 400-meter champion Trey Fisher placed seventh in the 400 (52.29) and 11th in the 800 while running on 1,600-and 3,200-meter relays. Fisher ran for two state champion 3,200-meter relays and a state runner-up in the 3,200-meter relay and a third-place 1,600-meter relay the past three seasons.
“It’s tough for our seniors. I felt bad for Erin Crissman and Trey Fisher because track is their best sport, the one they excel in,” said St. John coach Trish Wade. “Erin is a girl who continued to get stronger every year. She was going to long jump, triple jump, run the 400 meters and a relay. Trey loved his relays, which always peaked at the right time at the state meet. Trey is a great runner who would’ve run the 400, 800 and 1,600.”
Sophomore Darby Smith placed fourth in the 1,600 (5:41.12) after winning the 1A regional. Smith would run the 400, 800 and 1,600 and run the 1,600-meter relay.
Distance runner A.J. Miller placed third in the Central Prairie League 1,600 (4:59.73) and 3,200 (11:18.97). Miller emphasized his distance events.
Wade competed in high jump, hurdles and the 400 meters at Haviland High School before earning All-America volleyball honors at Barton Community College.
“I really enjoy track, which gives everyone a chance to compete,” Wade said. “I was fortunate to try different events in high school. That’s helped me as a coach.”
BOYS GOLF — A trio of Woolfs – two-time state qualifier Marshall Woolf, Austin Woolf and Toby Wolf were going to lead the 2020 St. John golf team.
St. John coaching legend Clint Kinnamon will direct the Tigers’ golf team. Kinnamon had coached St. John's boys to the 1A state semifinals in Dodge City when the season was canceled. The Tigers (388) placed eighth in 2018 at Dodge City’s Mariah Hills Golf Course.
"They had a great shot qualifying for the state tournament," Kinnamon said. "Marshall will play college golf at Hesston. Austin Woolf is a past state qualifier. Toby Woolf played golf last summer and had really improved."
