ST. JOHN 45, CENTRAL PLAINS 38 – The St. John girls know that you’ve got to beat the Central Prairie League champion, to be the champion. Earlier this season, the Tigers ended the Oilers’ 29-game winning streak against St. John.
No. 2 ranked 1A Division 1 St. John (15-1, 5-0 CPL) ended Central Plains’ 67-game Central Prairie League winning streak with a hard-fought 45-38 overtime victory over the Oilers. Central Plains (10-4, 3-1 CPL) had not lost a Central Prairie League game since losing to Kyle Kriegh’s Ellinwood team 66-58 on Feb. 22, 1015
Mia Meyer was the Tigers’ leading scorer with a career high 18 points. Marilyn Soeken scored 15 points and Ogle added 13 points.
St. John rallied for a 41-38 lead on Meyer's free throw. Soeken passed to Addy Ogle, who converted a tying 3-pointer for a 38-38 tie. Meyer missed a 3-pointer to force an overtime. Meyer scored four points in overtime as the Tigers outscored the Oilers 7-0.
The game was back and forth the whole time. The Oilers squeezed ahead 21-19 at halftime.
“I’m beyond proud of the effort tonight,” said Central Plains coach Pat Stiles. “Those girls fought hard the entire game.”
The Oilers are in the Tigers' 1A substate, so a third matchup is likely. The Oilers travel to Ellinwood Tuesday.
