STERLING — St. John’s season-long winning streak was ended by 4A Buhler, but the runner-up Tigers ran some of their fastest times of the season at Thursday’s Sterling Invitational cross country meet. Buhler scored 22 points and St. John scored 63.

Temperatures were in the 40s with a steady mist, but no wind. The Central Prairie league teams compete Oct. 11 at Ness City.

St. John’s A.J. Miller (17:04.1) finished as seventh medalist and Mason Osborne (17:09.1) earned the 10th medal.  Other Tiger runners were Cashe McVey, 15th-place mdeal, 17:19.0; Wrangler Walker, 19th-place medal, 17:23.7; Hunter Hanson, 24th-place medal, 17;53.3; Uriel Calleros, 29th, 18:06.3; and Trey Fisher, 40th, 18:33.4.

“The boys ran some great times against tough competition,” said St. John coach Joel Delp. “Our guys are running well going into the final weeks of the season.”

Larned’s Brayden Lothman earned fifth medalist honors (16:54.5).

St. John's Jackie Rios finished 37th, 22:53.3; followed by Paige Doran, 51st, 24:16.4 and Jaden Reed, 61st, 25:49.4.

“Our girls ran well," Delp said. " With league and regionals on the horizon, we need to continue to whittle our times.”

MACKSVILLE —Ninth-grader Abigail Ibarra (21:56.9) captured medalist honors in the freshmen division to lead the Mustangs. Itzel Garcia (22:05.5) placed 25th and Gabe Wolf (18:49.1) finished 41st in the varsity division. In the junior varsity division, Anna Suiter (26:57.6) placed ninth and Kyler Evans (20:12.3) finished 11th.

Macksville coach Mike Hullman said the Mustangs ran personal season-bests in the cool and calm conditions.

"Wow, what a meet we had," Hullman said. "We ran extremely well with all runners setting new PRs for the season.  The conditions were great for running, cool with a mist in the air. Our runners took full advantage of the weather conditions and a fast course.  We had several earn medals with the freshmen girls dominating their race.  This amazing effort sets us up well. This gives confidence that we have been searching for.  They showed what they can do when they challenge themselves.  Some of them even said that they should have given more."

NINTH-GRADE JV — In the Freshman/JV boys’ race, St. John's Dalton Nemec placed runner-up (18:48.3).  Other Tigers —Dylan Reed 9th place medal (20:05.7), Nick Huston 8th place ninth-grade (21:42.7); Ethan Huston, 30th (22:54.1); Sead Pepic, 37th (24:23.6); and Edson Gracia 43rd (25:51.6).  In the JV girls race, Shayla Garcia earned a 13th place medal (29:36.1) and Jordon Willinger was 16th, 31:53.0.

In the 7th grade boys mile race, Quade Smith (6:03.6) earned third with a season-best time.  August Siefkes (14:23.2) placed 8th in 8th-grade girls.  Mackenzie Hacker (16:41.4) placed 25th.

“This was the last meet and they ran some of their best times.," Delp said. " They were a fun group to coach. I’m looking forward to seeing them develop."
