HOISINGTON — Drew Nicholson scored 24 points to spark No. 8 Hoisington past pesky Smoky Valley in Thursday's non-league basketball game. Bralen Thompson fed Chase Robinson with the game-clinching fast break and Ryan Woydziak added two insurance free throws.

Cardinal Mason Haxton scored 12 first-half points to score 998 career high school points.

The Vikings (3-8) kept attacking while converting nine of 22 3-pointers to outscore the Cardinals 27-3 on 3-pointers. The Cardinals continue to struggle with perimeter defense.

"We're lucky to get out with a win," said Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton."They're a good basketball team that's play you tough. We made one and gave up nine in return. They shot a decent percentage. We've got to defend it better. We helped too much inside. We've got to play better perimeter defense."

Coach Haxton would've liked to play a tougher-minded game. Ryan Heline (13), Haven Lysell-Stewart (12) and Jake Lucas (11) scored in double figures.

"We didn't have that toughness," Haxton said. "They mixed up their zones. We struggled and settled for perimeter shots. Chase Robinson was our toughest player tonight."
