HESSTON – Hoisington High’s 13th-place medalist Tricia Schremmer, 183 (93-90) earned what she wanted — a second top 20 state medal at Tuesday's 3-1A state golf championship at Hesston Golf Course.
Schremmer started off slowly each day, but rebounded as each nine holes progressed.
Schremmer parred three of her last nine holes on the front nine and three of her final five holes on the back nine. Schremmer beat last year's state score of 184 at Hutchinson's Carey Park Golf Course by one shot.
"My goal was top 20, so I'm really pleased," Schremmer said. "I started off rough both days, but I battled back really well."
Schremmer made a swing adjustment that improved her score Tuesday in ideal 75-degree weather with winds under 10 mph.
"I got my rhythm going.," she said. "I straightened my drives when I scored better. I moved my hips and hands quicker. At the beginning, I was pulling my drives off the tee. I like Hesston Golf Course. It has a lot of doglegs."
Hoisington teammate Ally Karst finished 37th at 197 (94-103). Karst birdied the par 3 13th hole Monday, but carded a 10 at the 14th hole.
The Cardinals (401) missed Monday's 18-hole cut by seven strokes. The Cardinals also counted scores by 49th-place Kaylee Shives 104 (49-55) and 63rd-place Lexus Petersilie, 110 (57-53).
Silver Lake 701 (356-345) cruised to the 3-1A team title by 22 strokes over runner-up Colby 723 (364-359). Wichita Collegiate's 3-time state champion Margaret Ulrich 154 (73-81) struggled Tuesday with seven bogeys or worse, but won her third title by six strokes over Silver Lake’s Klara Kleinig, 160 (80-80) and Colby's Anna Starbuck 160 (82-78).
Larned’s Erin Tims placed 25th at 190 (97-93), barely missing a top 20 medal. Tims parred Nos. 1, 8 and 9 on the front nine.
