Two champs lead four Cardinal qualifiers

WAKEENEY — Hoisington's No. 1 ranked regional champions Josiah Ball (23-3, 113) and Joshua Ball (31-0, 182) earned first-place finishes to headline four Cardinal qualifiers for 3A substate wrestling. 

Josiah Ball beat a pair of state-ranked wrestlers with a 3-2 championship win over Hoxie's No. 4 Wayne Shepard and a 5-1 win over No. 5 Kaleb Atkins. Ball will see both wrestlers again at the Minneapolis substate.

Joshua Ball pinned Oberlin's Gavon Euhlin (1:41) and earned a walkover victory over Hill City's No. 2 Jayce Hamel, who elected to forfeit the championship match.

Hoisington's other substate qualifiers are fourth-place Eastin Redetzke (22-13, 120) and Logan Philbern (23-8, 220). Oberlin's No. 6 Lukas Zodrow pinned Redetzke (2:31) for third-place. Oakley's Christian Koch pinned Philbern for third place.

Hoisington's other place-winners were fifth-place Deryk Yott (21-11, 132); sixth-place Evan Foltz (25-10, 138); and sixth-place Quentin Boxberger (145, 21-13). Hoxie's No. 1 Drew Ball pinned Yott (0:44) in the semifinals. Russeell's No. 4 Jacob Windholz pinned Foltz (0:57). The top four finishers qualified for the Feb. 20 Minneapolis substate.

Stafford’s Tarrant Young (17-3, 132) qualified for substate with a third-place victory over Hill City’s Aidan Hochman.
