Umphres wins, Panthers split pair

DE SOTO – Great Bend pitcher Carson Umphres struck out eight batters to lead a 3-1 baseball victory over Spring Hill Saturday. No. 3 ranked 5A De Soto (14-2) routed the Panthers 11-4 in Saturday's second game. Great Bend (11-5) plays at Hays-Thomas More Prep (12-2) Tuesday.

PANTHERS 3, SPRING HILL 1 (G1) – Umphres (4-1, 2.65 ERA) recorded four strikeouts swinging and four strikeouts as Spring Hill batters watched strike three. Umphres has 42 strikeouts in 37 innings. Koehn Ribordy retired Jordan Miller for the final out after Umphres passed the 105-pitch maximum.

Ian Premer delivered the key base hit with a 2-run single to score J.J. Grove and Koehn Ribordy in the third inning. Umphres scored on Trenton Kern’s sacrifice fly.

Cory Kirschner scored Spring Hill’s run on a Holden Lough’s sixth-inning groundout.

DE SOTO 11, PANTHERS 4 (G2) – De Soto pounced on Panther starter Hunter Herrman (3-2, 4.40 ERA) for seven runs, two earned. The Panthers committed three errors, yielded nine walks, hit a batter and threw three wild pitches.

De Soto catcher Braden Griggs shut down the Panthers' running game by throwing out Grove, Owen Kaiser and Umphres on attempted steals to take a trio of baserunners off the bases. 

After trailing 7-0, the Panthers rallied within 7-4 and left runners stranded in scoring position in two consecutive innings. Umphres homered to ignite a 4-run fourth inning. Premer scored on Carson Poe's bases-loaded walk. Daxton Minton singled home Eli Soupiset and Trenton Kern. The Panthers stranded runners at third and second when Grove and Ribordy were retired.

De Soto scored two first-inning runs on errors. Noah Thompson singled home Austin Lindsay in the second. Lindsay's triple scored Bennett Hutchison and Griggs in a 4-run third inning. Hutchison and Noah Thompson also drove home runs.

Thompson capped a 5-RBI game with a pair of RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings.
