What a weekend to be an NFL official and another 4-legged family member

So it was a pretty crazy Sunday of football last weekend, right? Not too many folks I know right now like NFL official. Since I do high school, I will distinguish between the two.

It’s bad enough for Kansas City Chiefs fans but those New Orleans fans are, well, a bit perturbed to say the least. I’m a Minnesota Viking fan so I didn’t really have a horse in the race.

I’m not sure Lyles Lashley will ever get over it. Lyles, as many of you know, is from Louisiana and a huge Saints fan. It’s a surprise we remained friends after the Saints Bounty Gate on my Vikings and Brett Favre a few years back.

I’ve never seen him so active on social media. Even when his fantasy baseball team was winning Tiger Ball Championships. He’s gone to calling it Super Bowl LIE instead of LIII. And then there’s Ron Mason. Saints and Chiefs fan. Poor fella.

Me, I watched with long-time Chiefs fan Steve Webster. There was a moment of celebration for Steve after the Tom Brady interception. Then the offside penalty on Dee Ford. He’s a free agent. He won’t be back in KC next year.

Anyway, it did seem like every call went the way of the Patriots late in the game. The roughing the passer call was pretty sad.

But the no pass interference call in the Saints game was, well, awful. Probably the worst no call since Drew Pearson shoved Nate Wright in the back in 1975 as the Dallas Cowboys beat my Vikings on a Hail Mary pass to go to the Super Bowl.

At least I’ve gotten over it that one. I haven’t held a grudge for 44 years. Nope. Not me. So, see, Lyles, there is hope that you, like me, will get over it eventually.

Prep Thoughts

I think we in the Golden Belt forget sometimes just how good Emily Ryan is. Why? Because she has been Magic Johnson good since she burst on the scene her freshman year.

If you are announcing Central Plains, it often goes something like this -- “A steal by Emily Ryan, pass to ‘fill in the blank’ good for two points assists to Emily Ryan.” Or just simply, ‘A steal by Emily Ryan, layup, good.”

The junior for Central Plains is on the national recruiting radar for 2020. You mostly see her around No. 50 in the nation and about No. 15 among point guards.

This is her stat line from the Macksville game Tuesday night – 25 points, 14 steals and four assists – at halftime. Central Plains led 53-3.

I’m not picking on Macksville, it was just the other team on the floor that night, but Ryan had more steals (20) than Macksville did points (13) at the end of the game.

Central Plains is ranked No. 8 in the latest CJ Online best of Kansas rankings. The only schools above it are 6A, 5A and 4A. I would love to see the Oilers take on the best schools from those classes.

If you get a chance, get out and watch this team play. They are special.

Former Barton Athlete/Coach update

Marvin Cannon has been playing some pretty basketball this season for Washington State. One of the main stars to the Barton men’s run to the Elite Eight last year at the NJCAA Tournament, Cannon is finding his stride at the NCAA DI level.

He has started 11 of the past 14 games for the Cougars, reaching double figures in five of those games. He has a career high of 23 back on Dec. 17 and he’s found double figures in recent Pac 12 games against Colorado and California.

The sophomore is averaging 7.5 points per contest and 3.1 rebounds. You can catch him on ESPN U Sunday at 7 pm at Oregon.

And Finally

I believe it was the great philosopher Forrest Gump that said ‘stupid is as stupid does’. Actually is might have been his mother, Sally Fields, that told him that saying. I guess I’m not 100 percent sure off the top of my head.

But, still, very true words.

Enter another dog for the Marzolf household. Because, obviously, two were just not enough. Katelyn snagged our now second dog from the Humane Society with the adoption of Paisley. She’s a terrier-miniature pincher mix, about six months old, stands about 10-12 inches and probably weighs in at say 15-ish pounds.

She is all puppy still, that's for sure.

Size-wise, she is between Waffle, the 35 lbs. terrier mix and fellow rescue dog Bambi, a Chihuahua that may push eight pounds. Maybe.

We’ve had her a couple of weeks. She will hopefully go off to Hays with Katelyn in the summer as she goes to school there. At least that is what I am told.

Three dogs can keep one busy. I’m not sure if I need a kennel license at this point or not.

The dynamic between the three can be quite entertaining. Usually two are getting along and the other wants left alone. Paisley is one of the two wanting to play always. It's just a matter of whether or not its Waffle or Bambi she can talk into playing with her.

Every once in a while all three will chase each other around. Usually its the Chihuahua that wants left alone. Sometimes its both. They are not as young as her.

Paisley did find out just like Waffle and Bambi before her the real alpha animal is one of our two cats, Tater. She will not run from you. She will swat at you. She has claws. In fact, sometimes she lays in wait behind furniture just to get a swat in.

I'm pretty sure if Forrest Gump stopped by he would shake his head. Yep, stupid is as stupid does.
