The Hoisington Wrestling team came as close as a team can come in not winning a team championship at the Central Kansas League tournament hosted by Hoisington this past Saturday. The team lost by just a mere 1/2 point to Smoky Valley High School. Making it even tougher on the Cardinals was that they had the fire power to have won the tournament, if they had been able to be at full strength. Gone from the lineup was one of their main cogs in senior Chance Boor at 195 lbs. Chance a state placer last year has been a finalist at every tournament this year at 195 lbs., but had to miss the event due to illness. The Cardinals were also without the services of senior KC Stephens at 220 who suffered a season ending injury at the Panther Classic last week. In spite of the adversity the rest of the Cardinal Wrestling team did not disappoint as they battled all day to try to bring home the first place plaque. Leading the way for the Cardinals were the Ball brothers as all three Brandon 138, Jonathan 145, and Christopher at 152 won championships. Just missing the gold, finishing in second for the Cards were: Tanner Cassity 113, Hunter Hanzlick 170, Austin McHenry 182, and Landen Urban 285 lbs. class. Landon Harmon 120, Kody Lang 126, and Justin Bradley 220 lbs. placed third to give the team 10 spots in the top three of the tournament. The tournament was marked by one of the few times all year that the Cardinals did not fill a full team.
Next action for the Cardinals will come this weekend when they travel to Russell High School for the Class 1-3 A Regional Wrestling Tournament.
Coach Schmidt’s comments about the league tournament: “Our kids wrestled very well all day. I was very pleased with how Justin Bradley stepped in for KC Stephens at 220. His getting us third was big. Hope we can get over the flu. It seems to pop up with several different kids each week. Jonathan Ball was outstanding all day. He beat a very good Brandon Archuleta from Smoky Valley in the finals 8-1. Jonathan’s brothers were not too bad either. We are still a bit to inconsistent to be a team that wins a state title. We show ourselves each week that we had great possibilities. I wonder how good we could be if we all would just wrestle up to our capabilities.”
