The Kansas City Royals announced Monday that center fielder Lorenzo Cain has been named the Royals Majestic Player of the Month for July, while right-handed pitcher Wade Davis has been named the club’s Pitcher of the Month. The player award is determined by a combined fan and media vote, with the pitcher award voted on by local media.
Cain hit .367 during the month of July with eight doubles, two triples, five homers and scored an American League-best 22 runs. He ranked third in the A.L. with a .667 slugging percentage and was seventh in batting average. He was named the league’s Player of the Week on July 20, after going 7-for-17 with two homers in a four-game series against the White Sox. Cain also recorded two hits, including an RBI double, in the All-Star Game July 14 in Cincinnati.
Davis is the Pitcher of the Month, earning the honor for the second time this season. He recorded a team-best four victories (4-0) during the month, which also tied for the Major League lead. The righty allowed just one run in 12 July appearances for a 0.84 ERA, while holding opponents to a .179 batting average with one walk and 12 strikeouts. He didn’t allow a hit over his last six July appearances, spanning 4.2 innings.
