ATLANTA (AP) — Alex Rodriguez has hit his 23rd career grand slam on Tuesday night, matching Yankees Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig for most in baseball history.
Rodriguez hit a full-count pitch from Atlanta’s Jonny Venters in the eighth inning into the left field seats to tie the game at 4. It was A-Rod’s first slam this season and his 10th homer overall.
Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer off Cory Gearrin two batters after Rodriguez connected.
CC Sabathia (8-3) left trailing 4-0 after seven innings but was the beneficiary of the rally. The big lefty gave up four runs on a season-high 10 hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Rodriguez ranks fifth on baseball’s all-time list with 639 homers. Willie Mays is fourth with 660.
