KANSAS CITY— Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar drilled a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning that broke the game open, and Alex Gordon had four hits and four RBIs as the Royals completed a doubleheader sweep with a 7-1 victory over the Rays on Tuesday night.
“You have to credit [the Royals],” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “They’re good. They put the ball in play. They make a lot of action happen.”
The Royals won Game 1, 9-5, on Paulo Orlando’s walk-off grand slam in the ninth.
Right-hander Edinson Volquez started the nightcap for the Royals and labored through five innings -- he gave up just one run, but threw 101 pitches.
“He made pitches when he needed to,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.
Added Volquez, “I never really got loose tonight and had trouble with the grip [in the rain]. But I felt lucky to get through five.”
John Jaso had two hits for the Rays, including his first homer of 2015, a rocket into the right-field corner.
