CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina coach Roy Williams is out of the hospital one day after surgery to remove a tumor from his right kidney.

School officials said the Hall of Fame coach checked out of UNC Hospitals on Thursday afternoon.

It remains unclear how much time the 62-year-old Williams will miss leading up to the start of preseason practice on Oct. 13.

The school says doctors discovered the tumor during a physical earlier this month, and the coach underwent a 3½-hour procedure to remove it. The severity of that tumor is unknown, and team officials say test results could be back in about a week.

Williams might need another operation to remove another tumor from his left kidney.

He has led his alma mater to NCAA championships in 2005 and 2009.
