Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library!
Alongside our regular Story Times next week, we have our ongoing Book Buddies program on Monday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. We’ve partnered with Great Bend High School Educators Rising to pair teens up with kids for one-on-one reading time. The goal of this program is to help kids get comfortable with reading aloud and, in doing so, improve their overall fluency, expand their vocabulary, and associate reading with positive experiences. This program runs through the last Monday in February.
The submission period for our Favorite Children’s Author Poster Contest for children fifth grade and younger ends next Friday, Feb. 25. Be sure to bring your entry to the Children’s Area by then to receive a participation treat and to be considered for an additional prize! Judging will take place on Monday, Feb. 28, for submissions in the following age groups: preschool, kindergarten through second grade, and third grade through fifth grade.
We still have some February 2022 TeenBookCrates available, so we are opening up this box to adults who are interested specifically in this edition of TeenBookCrate.
A TeenBookCrate is a free subscription-style book box. Each box has a theme and includes a library book along with some goodies, such as on-theme crafts and snacks. Patrons who check out the box read the book and return it and the box, and the rest of the contents are theirs to keep! Go to greatbendpl.info/teens and click on the link to claim yours today! Teens grades 6-12 can use the same link to sign up for the March 2022 edition starting next Monday. Other teen programs next week include our monthly Teen Anime Watch Party on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m., and our Shrink Pin Take & Make kits on Friday.
Next week for adults we have our regular Tech Tuesday at 11 a.m. and Crochet Club on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Due to technical difficulties that occurred on the original date for the program, we have rescheduled our Wrap Around virtual event to Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. We are presenting “Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement,” which covers music from the turn of the century to the present day. It also highlights various artists’ music, as well as their influence on the Civil Rights Movement, such as how proceeds from jazz concerts were used to finance major events like the Freedom Rides and the March on Washington in 1963. Join us for an evening of music and education about one of the most turbulent and critical times in American history.
