Celebrate your favorite author

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! We have lots of programming this upcoming week. First, grab your pajamas and bring your favorite stuffed friend to the library for a morning of stories, music, crafts, and snacks during Pajama Story Time Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Next Tuesday, February 1, marks the start of our Favorite Children’s Author Poster Contest, which will run through February 25. Kids can bring in their pieces celebrating their favorite author to be displayed in the Children’s Area. Each person who enters will receive a participation treat. Judging for first-place prizes will be for three age groups: preschool, K-2, and 3-5.

Wednesday, February 2, is World Read Aloud Day. It’s a great time to celebrate literacy and the importance of reading to children. Reading aloud is one of the most important things parents can do with children to help them build lifelong foundations in vocabulary and fluency, and to help children see reading as pleasure rather than just as something required for school. Take a photo of you and your child reading aloud and tag us #GBPLReadAloud and #WorldReadAloudDay to have your family put in a drawing for a prize. Then, watch for us on Facebook, where we will be popping up all over Great Bend throughout the day to read aloud to you!

For teens, we have February’s Casual Game Friday at 3:30 p.m. on February 4. This time we will be playing Mario Party Superstars on our brand new Nintendo Switch, courtesy of the Friends of the Library group! Experience all the fun of a board game with the random chaos of mini-games thrown in. Dash around the board while you try to be the first to reach the elusive power star. But watch out, because there are plenty of ways for your opponents to trip you up and take the star for themselves!

Also, don’t forget to sign up for the February edition of TeenBookCrate, a subscription-style book box without the fee! Teens can register to receive a themed reading and activity bundle once per month from February through April. All you need is a valid library card. To sign up, visit greatbendpl.info/teens between now and Monday, January 31, to fill out the Google Form and reserve your spot on the list. This month’s theme is “Read Me? ☑Yes or ☐No.”

For adults, we have two movie-related events to look forward to. First, we have the Great Bend Silver Screen Society Film Club meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The following day, we have our Adults Night Out Movie starting at 7 p.m. Both movie events are for adults 18 and older, and each attendee will receive freshly-popped, complimentary popcorn. Since Friday’s Adults’ Night Out movie is an after-hours event, patrons can enter the library via the north doors from 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

To see what else we’re up to at the library, visit our Facebook page and our website, greatbendpl.info. You can also message us on Facebook, email us at gbcirc@gmail.com, or give us a call at 620-792-2409 for any questions about our programming or services.
