After nearly twenty-seven years of writing regular columns about pertinent information for families, it is time to look for some new and fresh ideas. I tried googling May celebrations and found an interesting link. Besides the familiar Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day holidays which are celebrated this month I found some rather unusual ones. May 11th is designated as “Eat what you want day” and the 14th is “Dance like a chicken day.” (I’m not making this up!) When I zoomed in on May 10th, which is next Tuesday, the site said it is “Clean up Your Room Day.” Now there is a thought.
Looking around my office I definitely have papers to file and program supplies to put away. Tackling one corner and placing things into keep, discard, or recycle piles is a good place to start. Setting a goal at the beginning of each day to tackle one area, (drawer, shelf, etc) is exactly what I need to do. If you are reading this and think perhaps I am speaking to you, call or stop by for the Extension publication, “Cut the Clutter and Get Organized.” This fact sheet was written several years ago, but the information is still relevant.
The publication addresses how to clean a closet with this list of ten things to get rid of NOW.
• Anything with a stain, hole or tear.
• Clothing or accessories you like, but look funny on you.
• Purses you no longer use.
• Outdated clothing or accessories.
• Ratty weekend clothes.
• Clothing that does not fit.
• Worn shoes.
• Anything of a lower quality than your regular wardrobe.
• Dead lingerie.
• The good coat that will not fit over your other clothes.
If you are up for the challenge, consider celebrating “Clean up your room day” on Tuesday!
Celebrate Mom
Don’t forget to celebrate the special “moms” in your life today. I know I will be in touch with a favorite aunt since my mom and mother-in-law are both gone. I am sure the day will include spending time with some or all of our kids and grandkids. Remember, it’s not the present but rather your presence that will make mom smile.
