The 2014 4-H Shooting Sports season has started. The Barton County 4-H Air Rifle Program has been represented at two matches already this season.
The 4-H’ers started in the Air Rifle project in October and worked through mid-December. They learned the parts of the rifle, firearm safety and several different shooting positions. In January, the kid’s starting learning match rules and practicing hard.
On Jan. 18, five 4-H’ers from Barton County, traveled to Wichita to compete in the Sedgwick County 4-H Air Rifle Match. In the 13 year old and younger division, Parker Smith, from Great Bend, finished first with a score of 525 out of 600, Katelyn Reh, from Ellinwood, finished second with a score of 475 and Will Clark, from Great Bend, finished third with a score of 453. Parker’s score of 525 was the highest score shot for the whole match.
In the 15 and 16 year old division, Ryan Kohman, from Great Bend finished fourth and Lake Lyman, from Ellinwood, finished fifth.
The Barton County Team finished third out of eight teams. The team was made up of Ryan Kohman, Lake Lyman, Parker Smith and Katelyn Reh.
On February 8, eight 4-H’ers from Barton County, traveled to Offerle, to compete in the Edward’s County 4-H Air Rifle Match. In the 10 year old and younger division, Will Clark finished first and Landen Hammeke, from Great Bend, finished third.
In the 11 year old division, Dalton Dicks, from Great Bend finished fourth and Logan Hammeke, from Great Bend, finished sixth.
In the 12 to 13 year old division, Parker Smith finished first and Katelyn Reh finished 2nd.
In the 14 to 15 year old division, Caleb Straub, from Great Bend, finished sixth.
In the 16 and over division, Ryan Kohman finished second.
The Barton County Team finished first out of eight teams. The team was made of Ryan Kohman, Parker Smith, Katelyn Reh and Will Clark.
The 4-H’ers will compete next on Feb. 15, at the Barton County Winter Classic that is held at the Expo Grounds west of Great Bend. The first relay starts shooting at 9 a.m. with a second relay starting at 11 a.m.
