It was announced that the Christmas program at Barton Community College will be at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The concert will be recorded for airing on Public Radio during the holidays and the public is encouraged to attend. The concert is free to the public.
The program was Mozart’s Don Giovanni which is arguably the world’s greatest Opera ever written. It was first performed in Prague in 1787. The story is told of Mozart’s last minute effort to complete the overture on the night before the initial performance with the orchestral members literally sight reading through the music for the first time at the opening in Prague. He added the woodwinds at the last minute and it was noted that he did not usually make any re-writes or corrections of his own works. The Opera is a combination of comedy and tragedy. The story of the womanizing Don Giovanni is said to have been modeled after the real life of Cassanova who was a friend of Mozart. This amoral character was never quite satisfied with life and continually searched for satisfaction moving from one woman to the next with the tragic ending of being sent directly to hell.
Refreshments were served by Eleanor Ramsey and Sharon Jones.
The next meeting will be Dec. 7 at the home of Chari Miller. The program will be the Opera Madame Butterfly.
